“What’s the point of this?”
This resource and upcoming website is not dedicated to telling you that your beliefs and understanding are not wrong- or right. We want the opposite of an echo chamber
Data tells a story, however an often incomplete one and one that does not always concern the majority of Americans.
And many of the “top issues” being discussed during this current point in time, again do not concern the majority of americans.
For instance, let’s examine a recent week in US media (September 30th-October 7th)
According to THE GDELT project (A non-profit created to utilized advanced data mining and deep learning algorithms to better make sense of the trillions of news-related data available)
Transgender (and related terms) appeared in the news 1207 times last week. Gender dsyphoria (The outdated DSM term for transgender) is affects less than 1% of the US population.
Autism (and related terms) appeared in the news 546 times last week. An estimated 1.5% if the total population has and autism diagnosis
Depression (and related terms relating only to depression) appeared 5,466 times last week. Around 8.3% of adults have a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder.
To be clear, None of this is to say that any of these conditions are illegitimate- All three are very real and can have a tremendous impact on their sufferers.
Now let’s make this less “ sciencey” and more understandable
Imagine if for every million transgender people had about 750 stories regarding their gender identity. That’s around six times more coverage than autism and almost four times more than depression.
Doesn’t make sense does it?
Put simply, media and political priorities & coverage don’t match real life impact.
Seems like… maybe we aren’t getting information that we need. Information that improves the lives of sufferers, their loved ones and communities.
At least to me and countless others I’ve spoken, the people are long overdue for change. Help yourself. Help your family. Help your community. We don’t care side of the aisle you’re on. we just want something different- and we deserve.
My hope is to bring together less eggheads and more people who want to feel some faith, and trustworthiness in our public health infrastructure. It may not be possible, but it’s sure worth a try…
